Turkey Plans Revived Hejaz Railway Route as Alternative Trade Corridor to Hormuz

(MENAFN) According to reports, Türkiye has announced plans to modernize the historic Hejaz Railway and extend it toward Oman as part of an ambitious effort to create an alternative global trade route to the Strait of Hormuz.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said during a briefing at the Anadolu Editor Desk that the project aims to restore sections of the railway for both tourism and modern freight and passenger transport.

He explained that the initial phase would connect Türkiye to Aleppo, using existing rail links through the Aleppo–Damascus–Jordan corridor, while ongoing discussions continue with regional partners, including Saudi Arabia.

The long-term objective, according to reports, is to extend the line to Oman, ultimately reaching the Arabian Sea and providing a strategic alternative maritime access route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition to the railway project, the minister highlighted the broader “Development Road Project,” a 1,200-kilometer transport corridor linking Iraq’s Basra region to Türkiye’s border. This infrastructure plan includes highways, rail lines, energy pipelines, and communication networks, and is expected to be financed through international partnerships involving Iraq, the UAE, Qatar, and Türkiye.

Officials noted that while the design phase of the corridor has been completed, construction is expected to begin once regional conditions stabilize.

The minister also addressed the Zangezur Corridor, describing it as a key segment of the wider Middle Corridor linking Türkiye with Central Asia. According to reports, the Turkish side has finalized the tender for a 224-kilometer railway section connecting Kars, Iğdır, Aralık, and Dilucu, with work already underway.

He added that progress on the Azerbaijani side is nearing completion, while discussions continue regarding transit through Armenian territory to secure a more direct route connecting the Turkic world with Central Asia.
