Somalia Registers First Ship Under Its Flag for First Time Since 1991
Ports and Marine Transport Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur confirmed the historic development Thursday, declaring: "Today, we officially registered the vessel 'Guney' (IMO 8230417) under the flag of the Federal Republic of Somalia."
The registration, Minister Nur said, represents far more than an administrative formality — it signals a nation reclaiming its place on the world's waterways after more than three decades of institutional absence. The move is "symbolizing the revival of Somalia's maritime authority and the renewed credibility of the Somali flag," he said.
Nur used the announcement to issue a direct appeal to the global shipping community, urging shipowners and maritime businesses to register their vessels under Somalia's national flag.
The milestone follows Mogadishu's adoption of the legislative and regulatory framework necessary to establish a functioning national ship registry — incorporating both domestic legislation and the international maritime standards required for recognized flag-state status.
The achievement carries particular resonance given Somalia's vast maritime geography. The Horn of Africa nation commands a coastline stretching 3,330 kilometers — or 2,069 miles — the longest of any mainland African country, sweeping along the Gulf of Aden in the north and the Indian Ocean to the east and south.
