U.S. Launches Fresh Strikes on Caribbean Drug Ship
"Today, at the direction of President Trump, the Department of War carried out a lethal kinetic strike on another narco-trafficking vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO) in the Caribbean," Hegseth posted on X, the US-based social media platform.
Intelligence agencies had previously identified the vessel as actively participating in illegal drug smuggling activities, the defense chief indicated.
"Three male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters. All three terrorists were killed, and no U.S. forces were harmed in this strike," he stated in his announcement.
The operation marks the latest in an escalating campaign by Washington, which has launched over a dozen similar attacks—predominantly across the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean—resulting in a minimum of 64 fatalities since September's onset.
Human rights organizations alongside international legal scholars have raised serious concerns regarding the lawfulness of these military actions, contending that American strikes against suspected drug-running vessels breach established international legal frameworks.
UN human rights chief Volker Turk condemned the assaults as "unacceptable" and demanded an independent probe into what his office characterized as extrajudicial killings.
